It’s launch day. I can’t decide whether it’s apt or ironic that we are beginning on Labor Day. Look for our first posts on the body of the text to begin surfacing this week. Here we go!
Launch Day!

During the challenge, I was a PhD student in musicology at the University of Oregon (completed 2011). Currently, I am an Assistant Professor of music at Central Washington University. I research music branding and arts entrepreneurship, and teach courses in music history, arts and entrepreneurship, and the history of jazz. I’ll be reading this blog with relish! I just finished working my way through all five volumes in preparation for my comprehensive exams. I definitely felt like I had scaled a tremendous summit when I finished the last page! Good luck to you!
Bravo David! We look forward to hearing your thoughts.
I wish this blog had existed when I was slogging my way through the Taruskin! Best of luck to both of you; I hope you find it as rewarding as I did.
One tip: it helps a lot as far as retention goes if you study the rep. as you go through the books. Sometimes I feel that as musicologists we draw too sharp of a distinction between “repertoire time” and “narrative time.”
Good suggestion Alyssa! Don’t hesitate to chime in if you like.
Thanks, all! I’m looking forward to more of your insights as the project progresses.
